The Russian State Academy Beriozka Dance Company is to celebrate its 60th anniversary by performing at the Poly Theater in Beijing from Jan 29 to Feb 1.
Founded in 1949 by legendary Russian dancer Nadezhda Nadezhdina, the troupe is known for its symbolic "cloud move". Dancers in traditional Russian costumes move lightly and elegantly as if they were strolling on clouds.
Each member is proud of the unique move and keeps the skill a secret. The troupe has strict rules related to training and use of costumes. The backstage is forbidden to anyone outside the troupe and the costumes are never lent to other dance companies.
Featuring a fusion of traditional Russian dance, tales and classic ballet, Beriozka is testimony to the friendship between China and Russia over the past 60 years and has toured here many times.
One highlight will be a 50-minute solo dance drama in the latter stages of the show. Named Four Seasons, it was one of Nadezhdina's signature works and was considered too demanding to be presented after she died in 1979. The presentation in Beijing will be the first time it has been performed live in 30 years.
The Poly Theater show also features another signature item, the girls' round dance.
