Overseas Chinese in South Africa have expressed their deep concern over the Wenchuan earthquake. They're trying to offer help in any way they can.
The situation in the quake zone is now the biggest concern for overseas Chinese in South Africa. Every day, the Chinese embassy and consulates of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town receive many Chinese keen to offer assistance to their homeland. And overseas Chinese communities and organizations have been actively seeking donations.
They say although their business in South Africa is not very large, they still want to try their best to do something for the quake survivors. More than 7 million yuan, or 1 million US dollars, has been raised, and donations are continuing to come in.
Wu Shaokang, Africa Associate for Reunification of China said "We are organizing overseas Chinese in South Africa to donate money and relief materials, and support the rescue and relief efforts of our homeland. It's our responsibility to offer help when the motherland meets difficulties. We believe our country and people will overcome the disaster."
Besides donations, they've also organized some prayer sessions for the quake victims. They hope to contribute more for the reconstruction of the quake zone, especially to help children go back to school.
