Qingchuan county is one of the most seriously damaged places in the earthquake. All residents there are now living in tents. CCTV reporter Zhang Lu visited one tent and found out what life is really like in the temporary shelters.
Although the living conditions in the tent are a little harsh, he makes every effort to serve a dish that's up to the usual standards.
It's dinner time, and Wang Xingxiang is preparing supper for his family.
Sliced pork with sauce is the main dish for today. Although the living conditions in the tent are a little harsh, he makes every effort to serve a dish that's up to the usual standards.
Wang Xingxiang said, "Today, we are going to eat noodles. That will be easy. I'm now making a cold dish."
Most of the cooking utensils were saved from his damaged house. Wang said that all of their food is provided by the government and the quantity of the supply is enough to feed his large family every day. Wang's mother is peeling garlic, which she said will be helpful for preventing diseases. She says she misses her destroyed house very much.
Wang Xingxiang's mother said, "Living in this tent can't be compared with living in my old house. The ventilation is bad and it's very hot. But the government is good and they give us everything we need."
Wang has eight family members. They share a small tent of eight square meters. And every small space has been utilized. Wang said his father died in the earthquake but that, as survivors, he and his family feel lucky and are satisfied with what they have now.
Wang Xingxiang said, "We were very sad about the death of my father, but we think we are lucky since most of the family members survived. Now, with the help of the government and many kind-hearted people, our life is guaranteed. We are hoping for a good future."
The children are trying to adapt to their new life without TV or games. They said their biggest wish is to return to school soon.
Wang's nephew said, "I read books when I have nothing to do."
Supper is ready. Although the food is simple, it doesn't diminish the importance of a family dinner. Wang said the quality of life is not only measured by living in a tent or a house. Sharing joy and sorrows means much more to a family. And every member here is hoping for a new beginning.
