Earthquake survivors are settling in temporary communities all around the Sichuan capital city of Chengdu. Some government buildings and local schools are serving temporary shelters.
There are sporting activities for those who want to play.
This is the Longquanyi District of Chengdu city. There's a camp here for people left homeless by the earthquake. They moved in several days ago. Already they're settling in. There are sporting activities for those who want to play. There's a reading room for those seeking peace and quiet.
Song Kai, vice director of Longquanyi District, said, "People affected by the earthquake have been moving in over the past week or so. Our duty is to provide them with food and shelter. Relevant agencies of the district government have all been mobilized to see that it is done."
Management of this facility is centralized to oversee the services available to the residents. Of course there are public facilities--- water, electric power, food services and professional security. Medical doctors have been rushed in to lend what help they can. And a government-sponsored employment agency has an outlet in the community. Staff are helping survivors find new jobs.
The government of Longquanyi District has set up a special committee to oversee the care of quake survivors. Necessities of daily life are supplied to refugees at no charge. And -- in the event of strong aftershocks -- shelters have been set up nearby.
