Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has expressed deep condolences to the Chinese people and government.

Kevin Rudd said "I feel deeply saddened to hear that China was struck by a devastating earthquake. On behalf of all Australian people, I express deep sympathy. Over the past few days, we've been paying attention to TV reports on the earthquake. The disaster has caused a huge number of casualties and heavy losses. The current relief operation is facing great difficulties. I would like to express my support for the Chinese government, which has been fighting on the rescue frontlines. Australia is prepared to offer assistance to the quake-hit areas at any moment. All Australian people hope that the Chinese people can recover from the disaster as soon as possible."
