Shifang City is one of the disaster areas worst-hit by the May 12th earthquake in Sichuan. On May 16, the situation was still shocking in Shifang's worst-damaged mountain areas and the townships that run along them.

Along the two outcrops of Longmen Mountain, the three townships of Hongbai, Yinghua and Bajiao all disintegrated. In addition to Chinese rescue troops including firefighters and soldiers from Nanjing and the No. 15 Airborne Army, a Singaporean relief team is carrying out rescue work in Shifang.
