The Shandong provincial government has placed over 700,000 hectares of wetland under protection, according to the province's environmental protection department.

The Shandong government will administer major wetland conservation projects, manage the policy for the province's wetland protection, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with other cities, provinces and countries. Scientific restoration, rational use of resources and sustainable development will be department's major policy focuses.

By the end of 2010, 15 reserves for wetland with a total area of 600,000 hectares and 44 wetland parks with a total area of 103,400 hectares had been established in the province.

Ecological conversation and restoration projects involving a total investment of 150 million yuan (US$23.745 million) has effectively protected indigenous animals and plant life.

Wetlands in Shandong fall into five categories: offshore and coastal wetlands, river wetlands, lake wetlands, swamp wetlands and artificial wetland.

1.7 million hectares of wetlands exist in Shandong, accounting for 11.4 percent of the territory and five percent of China's wetland habitats.
