A Chinese man was detained by police Tuesday on charges of raping a young woman who reportedly came to Beijing to petition against what she believed was a wrongful college expulsion.
Xu Jian, 26, from Tongbai County in central China's Henan Province, allegedly raped the woman surnamed Li from eastern Anhui Province at the Juyuan Hotel in Beijing's Fengtai District on Aug. 4, a spokesman with the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau told Xinhua Tuesday.
Xu fled the scene, but surrendered to police in Tongbai Tuesday morning, the spokesman said.
Xu is under detention in Beijing and has confessed his crime, he said.
The case is being further investigated, he added.
