Some 2,600 Chinese and Russian troops showcased their power in the real-combat simulation of the "Peace Mission-2009" joint anti-terror military exercise in Jilin province on Sunday morning.

More than 100 tanks, self-propelled cannons, as well as more than 60 aircraft are fighting against "terrorists" in the 80-minute final performance of the five-day exercise.

The exercise is conducted based on the simulations of an attempt by "terrorist forces" seeking an independent armed regime at "Kunshan Township".

"Terrorist forces" took hostage of "innocent people" and carried out "terrorist activities" including "beating, smashing, looting, burning and killing".

In the simulations, 10 Chinese scouts, after parachuting from a transport helicopter, conducted accurate reconnaissance activities, which helped paratroopers to precisely locate and attack terrorists.

Chinese and Russian fighter planes and bombers then launched a series of attacks that led to the downfall of the terrorists' headquarters and communication centers.

Ground forces comprising more than 100 tanks, armored vehicles and self-propelled cannons, encircled "Kunshan Township" while special forces interceptted running terrorists.

Military observers from the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and senior officials with the SCO's secretariat were watching the exercise conducted at the Taonan Tactical Training Base in northeast Jilin Province.

The Sino-Russia joint military exercise is the third of its kind after 2005. Under the framework of the SCO, China, Russia and other member states of the SCO held two similar anti-terrorism exercises under the name of "Peace Mission" in 2005 and 2007.
