Beijing police rule out murder over cleaner's death plunge

Beijing police ruled out the possibility of murder in their investigations into the death of a cleaner who plunged 45 storeys at the new headquarters of China Central Television (CCTV), local sources confirmed Tuesday.

The dead cleaner, a 23-year-old man surnamed Wang from north China's Hebei Province, belonged to the Sanfengyijia Decoration Co., Ltd, said a policeman who declined to be named.

It is unknown yet if he fell off by accident or if the death plunge was suicide, he said.

Wang, who was operating the lift for other cleaners, fell from the top of the 45-storey A tower in the CCTV complex at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Further investigation is continuing.

The new CCTV building, dubbed "the giant shorts", cost about 5 billion yuan (714 million US dollars) and is among the most controversial new buildings in Beijing.

A separate 30-storey building, also part of the new CCTV complex about 200 meters from the iconic tower, was badly burnt on Feb. 10 by fireworks. A firefighter died when battling the fire.
