Explosion rocks township gov't in Sichuan

A township government compound in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province was hit by "a bomb thrown by terrorists" early Monday, according to official sources of the prefecture.

No casualty was reported from the explosion, which occurred at 0:20 a.m. in Bogexi Township of Batang County.

An investigation team has been set up to look into the attack.

Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is located in west Sichuan and covers an area of 153,002 square kilometers.

The autonomous prefecture is home to 25 ethnic groups including Tibetan, Han, Hui, Yi, Qiang and Naxi with a total population of 900,000. Among them, Tibetans account for 78.4 percent.

Figures from the year 1990 show that in Batang County, where the incident happened, there were 47,256 residents, of whom 44,601 were Tibetans.
