China opposed to unreal, stigmatized comments in UN body report on torture

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said China is resolutely opposed to the unreal and stigmatized comments on China made in a United Nations Committee Against Torture report released in Geneva Saturday.

China has fulfilled the obligations set out in the UN convention against torture and made persistent efforts in this regard, said Qin at the wee hours Sunday.

Chinese delegation, in the course of the committee's review of the China report, has reported the measures taken by Chinese government as well as the current anti-torture situation in the country in detail, said Qin.

Qin said China regrets that some committee members had, from a prejudiced view, ignored the substantial material provided by the Chinese government, and quoted some unverified information or even fabricated some.

"They put unreal and stigmatized comments into the committee's final conclusion, which lacks justice and professional objectiveness, against which China firmly opposes," Qin said.

Chinese government will continue to protect human rights and is willing to make international cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect, Qin said.
