LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The British cycling team won the gold by breaking the men's team sprint world record at velodrome here on Thursday.
Britain beat France in the final to win the men's cycling track team sprint team gold medal. Leading by Chris Hoy, the team rewrote men's team sprint cycling world record in 42.600 seconds.
The victory gave Hoy the fifth Olympic gold medal of his career. "It's just great to win here in the UK, in front of this crowd, it's phenomenal. You cannot overstate what this means to us. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Hoy said.
Britain defended its title from Beijing Games. Jason Kenny and Hoy are back from the 2008 gold-medal winning team, with Philip Hindes replacing the retired Jamie Staff, now a coach of the sprint program for the American track cycling team.
"It's like a dream come true. I cannot believe I am Olympic champion. My restart wasn't the greatest. I was trying to be the fastest, trying to be perfect," Hindes said.
Germany beat Australia in the battle for the bronze medal race. Enditem
