The Spring Festival Gala should not be hosted only by traditional China Central Television (CCTV) and we should introduce competitive mechanism, Liu Chunmei, a deputy of National People's Congress (NPC), told the Qilu Evening News on Tuesday.

Liu, who became famous for her short act "River Crossing" in a Spring Festival Gala, decided to propose the reform during the upcoming NPC session after years of criticism that the gala has been blended with too many commercials and the station is unable to make it more attractive.

"The gala presented to all the Chinese people over the world on the eve of Chinese New Year is hosted only by CCTV every year, so it is not open enough. For my part, the director, hosts, programs, and the gala's site could be selected around China by means of recommendation, votes or bid inviting," Liu said.

Meanwhile, Liu pointed out that more and more advertisements were inserted in this year's gala program and it disappointed the audience.

"The gala is not just a commercial performance. It should pay more attention to the public interest, showing China's more excellent culture to the world."

Moreover, Liu thought that in recent years some familiar faces often appeared at the annual gala but few young actors have chance to play at the noted gala.

"The Spring Festival Gala should admit the most outstanding people from all walks and most splendid programs. By that the audience will not get bored," Liu added.

The annual TV pageant has usually drawn most spectators in China on the lunar new year eve and has been a source of profits. Statistics showed that the gala earned more than 600 million yuan(US$86 million) in ads revenue this year.
