Police have arrested a young man after a medical intern was killed and three doctors were seriously injured in a knife attack on Friday in a hospital in Harbin, capital city of Heilongjiang Province.
Wang Hao, 28, was killed after the attacker slashed his neck with a knife when the suspect stormed into the doctor's office inside the No. 1 Hospital attached to Harbin Medical University about 5pm on Friday, according to local police.
The 20-year-old suspect, surnamed Li, held a grudge about his medical treatment at the hospital and brought a knife to exact revenge, he allegedly confessed to officers after the arrest.
The victims were not involved in Li's previous medical treatment and he allegedly picked the targets randomly, police said.
The injured were no longer in a critical condition after emergency surgeries yesterday, the hospital said.
The doctors had no time to respond as they were at their desks doing paper work when the suspect rushed into their office wielding a knife and started slashing at them, witnesses reportedly said.
Li had visited the hospital several times before as he had been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, or chronic inflammation of the spine that causes back pain and stiffness. A preparatory medical check found he also had tuberculosis. Doctors told him he should get treated at a specialist clinic for infectious diseases first before he could be admitted to the hospital, police said.
