A survey released on Tuesday showed that only one in five Chinese consumers trust the quality of bottled beverages, with others citing illegal additives as a major concern, Xinhua reported.

The online survey conducted by China Youth Daily showed that dairy beverages stir up the most anxiety among consumers, with 67.8 percent of the 1,290 survey's respondents expressing doubts about the quality of dairy drinks.

More than half of respondents said that the quality of fruit and vegetable juices was their main concern, with drinks made by stores and restaurants ranking third.

The survey, conducted last week on the sina.com website also showed that around 87 percent of those polled worry about illegal additives in beverages, while 81.5 percent of respondents also expressed concerns regarding the introduction of harmful substances into beverages due to poor quality control management during production.

The majority of consumers blamed the quality watchdog and beverage producers for safety issues, with 87.5 percent saying that authorities have failed to ensure adequate supervision. In addition, 79.7 percent of respondents believe that beverage producers lack business ethics.
