Former Chinese mayor dismissed for corruption

National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, approved Friday the termination of a former mayor's NPC deputy title for corruption allegations.
Zhou Yizhong, former mayor of Kaifeng city of central Henan Province, was dismissed from the NPC for "allegedly committing serious crimes and violations of disciplines and laws," according to a statement released Friday by the 11th NPC Standing Committee.
In late July, the Standing Committee of Henan Provincial People's Congress approved Zhou's resignation as a deputy to the NPC following allegations of corruption and bribery.
According to previous reports, Zhou is accused of having taken significant amounts of money as bribes from individuals involved in the real estate business and local officials while serving as the major of Kaifeng and vice secretary of the Communist Party of China Committee of Nanyang, another city in Henan, according to a statement from the provincial discipline watchdog.
Zhou was removed from his official post and placed under detention for corruption probe in May.
