Communist Party members exceed 80m in China

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has more than 80.269 million members by the end of 2010, said a senior official Friday at a press conference in Beijing.

Last year, 3.075 million people joined the CPC, the world's largest political Party -- showing a net increase of 2.274 million taking into account members who died or left the party, Wang Qinfeng, deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at a press conference.

Female party members amounted up to 18.03 million, accounting for 22.5% of the total of the CPC.

Party members of ethnic minorities amounted up to 5.33 million, accounting for 6.6% of the total of the CPC.

The two leading groups in new members were college students and people at the frontline of production or work, such as industrial workers, farmers, herders, and migrant workers, both accounting for more than 40 percent of total new Party members.

The CPC has 3,222 local committees at levels all over the country, including 31 committees at provincial (regional and municipal) level, 396 committees at municipal (district, prefectural) level, and 2,795 committees at county (municipal and district) level.

Party organizations had been established in nearly all government agencies, state-owned and private enterprises, and social organizations. They had also been set up in 99.9 percent of villages and urban communities and in all associations of lawyers and certified accountants.

The CPC, founded in 1921, will mark its 90th founding anniversary on July 1.
