Four tourists, including three from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, died in a traffic accident in east China's Jiangxi Province Thursday, said a statement from the local government Friday.

A Toyota van carrying seven people, including five from Hong Kong, one from Dongguan in the southern Guangdong Province and a local guide, veered off a mountain road near Mount Sanqingshan National Park, into a gully at least 70 meters below Thursday afternoon, it said.

The four dead included three Hong Kong residents and the tourist from Dongguan, the document said.

It said the other three people in the van survived with injuries, including the driver, and a Hong Kong resident surnamed Chan.

The injured are still being treated at a hospital in Shangrao City Friday. Their conditions were serious, but not life-threatening, said a traffic police officer who escorted them to hospital Thursday.

Transport authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

The van was registered in Guangdong. Police said the tourists were returning from a trip to Mount Sanqingshan National Park, a world heritage site, when the accident happened.
