Publicity official gets 11 years for graft in SW China

A senior publicity officer of southwest China's Chongqing Municipality was sentenced to 11 years in jail on Monday for taking bribes, a local court said Tuesday.
The No. 3 Intermediate People's Court of Chongqing handed down the sentence to Liu Jianchun, former vice director of the Publicity Office of Chongqing, for taking bribes worth 1.01 millon yuan (about 151,300 U.S. dollars).
Court investigations found Liu, 45, abused his powers by seeking business and employment benefits for those who bribed him when he served in various publicity positions between 2003 and 2010 in Chongqing.
The court said Liu was given a relatively light sentence because he had confessed his crimes and turned in all the bribe money.
Liu was detained during a mass corruption crackdown campaign in Chongqing, which has seen the conviction of a number of high-profile figures including government officials, lawmakers and gang members.
