A patient's story in Thailand

This is a PHA/MSM meeting. Part of my job is to change the attitude of the staff in prisons and hospitals and encourage the development of more MSM/PHA-friendly environments. Another part of my job is to work with PHA and MSM themselves.

There is a lot of stigma attached to MSM. I hate it when I hear people say "Being MSM is bad, but to be MSM and have Aids is even worse." I am both but I feel I can be proud. I work to change these attitudes.

Many MSM and PHA have extremely low self-esteem. We run camps to talk about prevention, provide information and help people develop a more positive image of themselves. We do this through discussions and games.

The T-shirt painting in the photo is one of these activities. By painting a T-shirt you are showing you are proud of your status. That you are a human being as well as a patient. [©Ton/MSF]
