The capital city of Central China's Henan Province has launched a pioneering project to restructure its police force by transforming various sub-bureaus into police stations in order to enhance its capacity for rapid and direct response.

Zhengzhou pioneers police shake-up

A total of 10 sub-bureaus and 114 police stations in provincial capital Zhengzhou have been restructured to form 29 police stations, authorities announced Sunday.

According to Zhang Wuqing, deputy head of the Zhengzhou Public Security Bureau, after the restructuring, the proportion of police making up frontline numbers will increase from 23 to 66 percent, with over 900 policemen ng the community.

The newly established stations will bypass the sub-bureaus and come under the direct command of the city's main police bureau to increase efficiency.

"Community police will always work in the community instead of taking shifts at police stations, so as to improve services for people living in every community," Tian Fei, head of the informa-tion office of the Zhengzhou bureau, told the Global Times Monday.

Over 90 percent of the city's restructured police force will deal directly with the community, while patrol areas will be expanded from the third-ring road to the fourth-ring road.

Police on patrol will be responsible for both security and traffic.

"This reform is still underway, so it is hard to say what effect it's having. But I believe residents will benefit from it," Tian said.

"Going into the community means solving problems at the first instance, which builds a strong fence in maintaining stability in our society," Tang Haiyang, a Zhengzhou resident, told the Global Times Monday.
