Chinese Vice Premier stresses flood prevention

Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called on authorities to ready themselves for more flood-prevention and relief work, as the flood season is not over and geological disasters are still striking frequently.
Hui made the remarks during a two-day visit to flood- and mudslide-hit Longnan and Tianshui cities in northwest China's Gansu Province.
Rain-triggered floods that began pounding 14 counties and districts in the cities of Longnan and Tianshui on Aug. 11 have left at least 42 dead and 13 missing.
Hui ordered authorities to step up disaster relief efforts in Longnan and Tianshui, including cleaning up sludge and debris and restoring transportation and communication links.
Hui stressed the importance of the resettlement of survivors and the reconstruction of facilities.
He also urged authorities in mudslide-prone areas to detect hidden risks and to relocate residents quickly once a risk is detected.
Hui said small- and medium-sized rivers are the weak link in China's flood-fighting efforts.
He said more flood-prevention efforts must be made along these rivers.
Hui's tour of Longnan and Tianshui ended Monday.
