Police in Chongqing Municipality has detained a woman accused of abandoning baby twins born prematurely by her daughter as she feared they could not afford their medical treatment.

The twins were born four months premature in a Chongqing hospital on Monday. They were found under a bridge in a remote district. One was already dead and the other was saved after being sent to hospital.

Their 46-year-old grandmother, Gao Yongrong, has confessed to the police that she had acted stupidly after she was shocked by "the two little things," Chongqing Evening News reported today.

The babies weighed only 840 grams and 500 grams when delivered. Doctors told Gao that it would take 200,000 yuan to treat the twins, but they could not guarantee the babies would be cured.

Gao said the family could pay that much as they had already borrowed money for her mother's hospital treatment. She lied to the doctor that she would take the twins home, but abandoned them instead.
