A former secretary-general of Fujian provincial committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) stood trial Friday in a court for taking huge bribes.

The defendant, Chen Shaoyong, went on trial at the Intermediate People's Court of Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu Province.

Chen was charged of demanding and taking properties worth of 9.18 million yuan (1.34 million U.S.dollars) by abusing his official posts as secretary-general and member of the standing committee of the provincial committee of the CPC from November 1992 to May 2008, according to the procuratorate of Nanjing.

In return, he helped relevant work units and individuals in business operation and helped concerned people in promotion, said the local procuratorate.
