Wu Poh-hsiung, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang, has called for more exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan to seek more common ground in culture.
Wu made the remark in Taipei on Monday during his meeting with a mainland delegation led by Wang Zaixi, vice chairman of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS).
Wu said Taiwan had attached great importance to the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture to which the people living on the island had constantly added local characteristics.
With more cultural common ground would come more common ground on the whole, he said.
Wang said many mainland delegations to Taiwan wanted to meet Wu because he had been dedicated to promoting cross-Strait relations during his tenure as the KMT chairman.
The mainland and Taiwan should boost cultural exchanges and cooperation while they were developing economic and trade cooperation, Wang said.
Cultural exchanges would help people on both sides better understand each other and bring people together, he said.
