The 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was elected at the closing session of the 16th CPC National Congress in Beijing on November 14, 2002.
Jiang Zemin, the core of the third-generation leadership of CPC, and five of his colleagues formerly in the Party's top decision-making body are not in the new central committee of the CPC.
With warm applause, more than 2,100 delegates to the congress showed their respect for and appreciation of Jiang and his colleagues for the "breadth of their political vision and sterling integrity."
Hu Jintao was the only member of the Political Bureau of the Standing Committee of the 15th CPC Central Committee who entered the 16th CPC Central Committee. Except Hu, the other eight are all new faces at the CPC's top decision-making body.
