China Monday reiterated its attitude toward the Syrian conflict as Syrian opposition groups struck a deal to form a new coalition, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Monday.

At a regular press briefing in response to a question regarding the coalition, Hong said China believed the relevant parties in Syria should implement former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan.

He said they should also implement relevant Security Council resolutions, and the communique of the Geneva foreign ministers' meeting of the Action Group for Syria, in order to end the gunfire and violence.

China hoped all parties in Syria would support mediation efforts by the UN's special envoy for the conflict Lakhdar Brahimi and begin a political transition at an early date, the spokesman said.

"We hope relevant parties' moves can help achieve those goals mentioned above," Hong added.

Syria's opposition groups struck a deal Sunday to form a coalition called "Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces" to negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad, according to reports.
