In the spring of 1950, the CPC Central Committee established the Publishing Committee of Selected Works of Mao Zedong, with Liu Shaoqi as the head. The committee took up the editing and publishing of the Selected Works.

On October 12, 1951, the first volume of Selected Works of Mao Zedong was published by the People's Publishing House, which included 17 articles written by Mao Zedong from March 1926 to August 1937.
