China, UK animators meet at forum

Leading animation production companies from China and the UK met at an animation forum in Beijing on Monday. Both sides said they expect to collaborate and seek business opportunities with each other.

Mark Leaver, president of innovative project management agency Parameter, said that they looked forward to cooperation in distribution, idea developing and services. "I don't think there is any serious 'cultural challenge' when it comes to animation," said Huang Jun, general manager of China Film Animation, citing experiences working with Japanese partners where everything "went smoothly." "We are open to anybody from any country."
China's animation industry has grown rapidly since 2004 and is expected to grow to US$3.1 billion this year, according to analysts. There are now 7,000 animation studios and 512 professional schools around the country. The government even listed the sector as a pillar industry during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) and has plans to emphasize its development.
The UK has introduced to China many of its animated programs, such as Thomas & Friends and Bob the Builder, which have seen moderate success. Eleven companies and one research team from the University of Exeter showcased their programs and merchandise at the forum to about 90 Chinese groups, who displayed their latest technologies, TV programs and film projects.
