The espionage blockbuster film "The Message" won the Best Film award on Saturday as the 17th Beijing College Student Film Festival closed its curtains.
"The Message", which opened in Chinese cinemas last September, is set during WWII and tells the story of a Japanese spy chief who tries to identify a Chinese agent from a group of rounded-up suspects.
The film was chosen from 39 candidate films that had been screened in universities across Beijing during the month-long festival.
Wang Quan'an won the award for Best Director for his tear-drawing drama "Apart Together". Wang won a Silver Bear award for Best Script for the same film at this year's Berlin International Film Festival.

The awards for Best Actor and Actress went to Huang Bo ("Cow") and Tao Hong ("Death Dowry"), respectively.

Vicki Zhao, better known as Zhao Wei, was named Most Popular Actress for the third time. Although she was not present at the awards ceremony, the new mother gave her thank-you message via telephone.

Jing Boran won the Best Newcomer award for his performance in the star-studded film "Hot Summer Days". Jing beat singer-turned-actress Li Yuchun, who made her screen debut in "Bodyguards and Assassins".

Wilson Yip, who won the Most Popular Director award for his kung-fu film "Ip Man 2", said at the ceremony that an "Ip Man 3" was possible, and Huang Xiaoming was likely to have an important role in the film. Yip said the third installment would focus on Ip Man's best-known student, Bruce Lee.
Jaycee Chan, son of Jackie Chan and a celebrity himself, was a performer at the ceremony. During his performance, he sent best wishes to his mother for Mother's Day. Jaycee's mother Joan Lin, who has rarely been seen in public in recent years, was among the audience.
Up-and-coming actress Wang Luodan was invited as an awards presenter at the ceremony. She spoke to the students about her difficult days as a student and encouraged them to be confident and make efforts to achieve their goals. Wang said she nearly failed the entrance examination for drama acting, but she was lucky that she met a great mentor.
