Thousands of students in music academies around China have been trying their hand at composing the theme song for the 26th World Summer University Games (Universiade) to be held in Shenzhen next year.

Since last October, 20 competitions have been held in major universities, including the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Chengdu Conservatory of Music and Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou.

Ten songs have now been shortlisted by a jury comprising composers and producers such as Yan Zhongkun and Jiang Jianmin.

The competition for Top 10 Singers on Campus has been running at the same time and drawn many students with no formal vocal training.

The final result of the theme song and Singers On Campus will be released in March.
