The gushing of the famous Baotu Spring in Jinan in eastern China's Shandong province faces a potential halt again. Its water levels fell to 27.66 meters on Saturday, lower than the warning figure of 28 meters.

The spring always encounters the same problem during this period of previous years, a local resident was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying. The local government has managed to reduce water consumption to ensure sufficient water for the spring.

The spring, one of the reputed symbols of the city, stopped gushing for 926 days from March 1999 to September 2001, the longest in history.

Jinan, the capital city of Shandong, is famous for its four springs in the old city area, namely, Baotu, Pearl, Black Tiger and Five Dragons.
