China actively participates in Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC), reserving differences while seeking common ground and
promoting cooperation. Addressing the 13th APEC
Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting in Pusan, ROK in November 2005,
President Hu Jintao elaborated China's views on global economic
balance, stability and sustained growth, as well as key issues of
APEC cooperation and development direction; he called upon the
international community for an effective response to the imbalance
in world economic development, to work together for the healthy
development of a multilateral trade system, to liberalize and
facilitate trade and investment, to achieve the Bogor targets on
schedule, and to deepen and expand economic and technological
cooperation. The President urged APEC members to cooperate closely
in tackling avian flu threatening Asia-Pacific regions and even the
whole world. In the same year, China hosted the APEC Seminar on
Renewable Energy. In 2006, China has hosted the APEC Seminar on
Emerging Infections to strengthen regional cooperation in
preventing infections affecting humans, such as highly pathogenic
avian influenza (HPAI). China was praised by APEC members for its
efficient, transparent and responsible attitude and for its
pro-activity in promoting international cooperation to tackle the
avian flu issue.
