The death toll from Monday's construction site accident in
central Beijing rose to six, official sources said on Tuesday.
The accident took place at about 10:10 PM Monday at the
site of the No.4 building, part of the ongoing Xixi Project in
Xidan, a business district in downtown Beijing.
More than 40 workers were onsite mixing concrete when a steel
scaffold collapsed, dropping some 20 meters, according to Liu
Zhaoyuan, security chief with the Beijing Municipal Construction
Committee.
Five workers were killed on the spot. Three bodies were
recovered Monday and two others yesterday afternoon. Some 20
others were injured. One of them died yesterday morning in
hospital.
The accident site has been cleared and investigations into the
cause of the accident are underway.
