Building Collapses Kill 8 in Chongqing, Shandong

Five people were killed and seven others injured as one basic ongoing infrastructure project inside a local thermal power plant in Hechuan, southwest China's Chongqing City collapsed early Saturday.

The tragedy happened around 4:20 AM when the infrastructure project under way for the No.1 steam turbine unit of Shuanghuai Thermal Power Plant, collapsed, according to local sources.

By 1 PM, the bodies of the five people killed and seven others wounded in the accident had been found. Those injured, including the four seriously injured, are now hospitalized.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Also on Saturday, three construction workers were confirmed dead in the collapse of a construction project in east China's Shandong Province after the body of the last victim was found.

The tragedy occurred Thursday morning when workers were busy pouring concrete on a theater roof under construction in the city of Linqing.

The 300-square-meter ceiling of the building suddenly caved in from the height of 20 meters, killing three people and injured three others.

The rescue operation has finished and no more casualties are expected, local safety supervision officials said.

The local government said the families of the victims have received compensation but did not disclose the amount.

The three injured, still hospitalized, are not in life-threatening conditions, doctors said.

The theater project, launched in March, is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
