The 5th Session of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese
People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) adopted a
political resolution at its closing meeting Wednesday, professing
support for the report of government work by Premier Zhu Rongji and
other major reports delivered at the current session of the
National People's Congress (NPC) which the CPPCC National Committee
members have attended as observers.
The CPPCC members spoke highly of the achievements China made in
2001 and expressed confidence in fulfilling the objectives set for
2002, holding that the current good situation was hard-won and
should be double cherished.
"The interests and will of the people are, as always, the starting
point and destination of all our work. Top priority should be given
to caring for the life of the masses, especially those in dire
conditions and the disadvantaged groups," according to the
resolution.
Hard work and frugality should be promoted while harsh measures
must be taken to fight fraudulence and extravagance, the resolution
suggested.
It
said the CPPCC session urged the government to shift its functions,
revise and improve relevant laws and regulations, develop and
increase China's economic competitiveness in the world, and
maintain China's state security and fundamental interests.
The CPPCC members are opposed to any attempt to split Taiwan from
the motherland and sincerely hope that the compatriots on both
sides of the Taiwan Straits make concerted efforts to the great
cause of the reunification of the motherland and the revitalization
of the Chinese nation.
The resolution said the session called on CPPCC committees at all
levels and all CPPCC members to work harder and greet the convening
of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China with
new accomplishments.
