The number of people living in Germany has increased for three years in a row as a result of high immigration, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said Wednesday.

According to its figures, nearly 80.8 million people lived in Germany at the end of 2013, up 300,000 comparing with the end of 2012.

The increase was due to continued high immigration, which compensated the birth deficit in Germany, said Destatis, whose figures showed that the number of deaths was approximately 200,000 to 220,000 higher than that of births.

Citing the unlikelihood of sustained high immigration, many experts expect a shrinking population in Germany in the medium term. The office predicted that the country's population would decrease to about 70 million in 2060.

According to the Institute for Labor Market and Employment Research, Germany's labor market would face a significant shortfall as there will be about 6.7 million workers less available in 2025 than in 2008. Endi
