Tunisian FM calls for humanitarian intervention in Syria

TUNIS, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdesslem called on the international community to support efforts for a humanitarian intervention to help ease the plight of the Syrian people, official TAP press agency reported Sunday quoting a foreign ministry statement.

Abdesslem, who was in New York to attend the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, also took part in the so-called "Friends of Syria" conference chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi.

During his address at the conference, Abdesslem reiterated Tunisia's initiative to set up a refugee camp in Jordan, manned by Tunisian medical staff, to "alleviate the suffering of the Syrian population."

He also called on the international community to support the efforts of the UN-Arab League joint special envoy to Syria, Lakhdhar Brahimi, to help all concerned parties "find a settlement which meets the demands of the Syrian people." Enditem
