LONDON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Michael Phelps said on Friday he will go all out to put the U.S. team atop the Olympic podium in the 4X100 medley relay final on Saturday.

The relay will be the last event of the eight-day swimming competition at London Olympics, also the last for Phelps who will retire afterwards.

"The 400 medley has been such a big race for our country. We've been able to be so successful in that race and it's something that we as a team look forward to," said Phelps, who was one of the U.S. team to set a new Olympic record to clinch gold medal at Beijing Games.

"We're going to be able to go out and have fun," he said.

Phelps said the team already had something in mind on how to finish the relay.

"Being part of the team and being part of the US relay was a goal of mine from a long time ago. I remember Peirsol (former teammate now retired) and I making the team together in 2000 and we had talked about that being a goal together," said Phelps.

It will be the seventh event for Phelps at London Olympics. He already had three gold and two silver medals, making himself the biggest winner from London Games as well as the most prolific medalist the Olympics have ever witnessed.

With his three-peat in the 100m butterfly on Saturday evening, Phelps is the owner of an Olympic record haul of 21 medals in Olympic history, including 17 gold.

He also had another three-peat in the 200m individual medley on Friday, becoming the first male swimmer to win a same event in three straight Olympics, not to mention two. Enditem
