The biopic of ancient Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius starring Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat is to hit cinemas worldwide on January 22.

Director Hu Mei plans to take the film's cast and crew to Qufu in Shangdong Province, Confucius' hometown, for a grand worship ceremony on the same day. Chow who portrays Confucius in the movie will deliver an elegiac address at the event.

The Hong Kong actor managed to portray Confucius in the film despite constant heated disputes over his ability to play the most revered figure in Chinese history. Chow never hid his lack of a deep understanding of the ancient philosopher, but tried to perform the role to the best of his ability. Major media praised his performance after a test screening of the film. Many of Chow's impromptu comments in public have shown his genuine respect for Confucius.

At Friday's worship ceremony, the actor will kowtow before a statue of the philosopher at the Temple of Confucius. Chinese people believe that kowtowing three times to be the highest degree of paying one's respect and homage to someone.

Chow first kowtowed to the audience to express his gratitude when answering questions about "Confucius" during a recorded program called "Art Life," which was broadcast on China Central Television last December. In the star-studded premiere ceremony for the film on January 14, he kowtowed onstage to a 93-year-old descendant of Confucius, which surprised and moved many in the audience.

The local government of Qufu usually holds a Confucius worship ceremony on September 28, the philosopher's birth date. Director Hu attended the ceremony last year after she finished filming "Confucius."
