Xinhua October 8, 2009
Macao's annual Lusofonia Festival, traditionally celebrated by local Portuguese-speaking community, was scheduled to take place between Oct. 23 and 25, the Macao Post Daily reported on Wednesday.
Organized by Macao's Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, this year's Lusofonia Festival, meaning Portuguese-speaking festival, is the 12th edition since it was first held back in 1998, which aims to promote different cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries and regions.
In addition to singing and dancing performances by local groups, the organizer also invited a six-member band from Portugual and an eight-member one from Angola to play rock, folk and other kinds of music during the event, the daily quoted an official of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau as saying.
Meanwhile, local communities from ten different Portuguese- speaking countries and regions, such as Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, etc, will set up booths to share their cuisines and offer various games in the festival, according to the organizer.
Being one of Macao's official languages aside from Chinese, Portuguese is spoken by about two percent of local population, most of whom are the so-called Macanese, local people of mixed Portuguese and Asian extraction.
