The first frog astronaut was sent into space in March 1961 with the Soviet Vostok 3A flights, along with several mice and guinea pigs.
In 1970, NASA launched a project called the Orbiting Frog Otolith program, which involved sending two bullfrogs into orbit. The frogs were in space from November 9 to 15, during which time researchers collected important neuro-physiological data.
The "Frog in Space" (FRIS) experiment is another example of frogs being used in space experiments. In the experiment, a Japanese cosmonaut took six tree frogs onto the Space Station Mir for eight days in December 1990.
