Australian Robbie McEwen beat world champion Tom Boonen of Belgium on Monday to claim the second stage of the Tour de France over a 228.5km trek from Obernai to Esch-sur-Alzette.

Thor Hushovd of Norway regained the overall lead from American George Hincapie after finishing third on the stage.

It was the ninth stage victory in nine Tours for McEwen who beat Boonen in a grouped sprint finish.

"I have not slowed down yet," said McEwen, who has recently turned 34.

With the victory, McEwen also moved up to third in the overall standings, with Boonen standing second.
