China's Last Hopes Fade in Melbourne
Adjust font size:

Yan Zi and Yuan Meng, China's last two singles players, bowed out of the Australian Open after losses to their respective rivals Thursday morning.

In the face of former world one Kim Clijsters, unseeded Yuan Meng did her best. The 6-4, 6-2 failure was not unexpected.

Earlier, doubles specialist Yan Zi was too nervous and made lots of unforced errors to lose her second round game against Austria's Sybille Bammer: 6-3, 6-4.

To date, Chinese players have left the singles tournament. They, however, will continue in the women's doubles competition.
