Cuban star pitcher Vera leaves hospital over car accident

The Cuban star pitcher Norge Luis Vera left Wednesday the hospital in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, where he was sent on December 22, after suffering severe injuries in a car accident, the official NTV news reported.

Vera was the victim of a traffic accident on December 22 at the National Highway near Santiago de Cuba. The incident caused him severe head trauma, left humerus fracture and the dislocation of his left hip.

The injures forced him to remain in intensive care for 15 days.

"Right now I feel much better, thanks to the medical staff, and everyone at the hospital who made their best efforts," the athlete said. After leaving the hospital, he will continue his recovery at home.

Days before the accident, Vera expressed his intention to return to the Santiago de Cuba team, reversing the retirement decision he had taken in September 2011.

40-year-old Vera, who is considered one of the best pitchers in Cuba, was borned in Santiago de Cuba, participated in 17 National Series, with 176 victories and 68 defeats. He won three world championships, the gold medal in Athens 2004 and silver in Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008.
