Cuba's Mijain Lopez (blue) beat Russia's Khasan Baroev to win the men's Greco-Roman 120kg gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games here on August 14. Baroev took the silver. Lithuania's Mindaugas Mizgaitis and Armenia's Yuri Patrikeev finished joint third.

He Hanbin and Yu Yang become the sole Chinese pair to reach the badminton mixed doubles semifinals at the Olympic Games on August 14. They beat Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk of Poland 22-20, 23-21. The other Chinese mixed doubles Gao Ling and Zheng Bo were eliminated early in the first round on August 13.

Chinese beach volleyball women duo Zhang Xi/Xue Chen remained unbeaten on August 14, as their compatriots Tian Jia/Wang Jie did on the previous day of the Beijing Olympic Games. In their third preliminary in women's group D, Zhang/Xue won over South African pair Judith Deister Augoustides/Vitalila Nel comfortably, downing the visitors in two sets (21-13, 21-9). The South African duo, defeated for the third time in preliminary round, was out.

Forward Gerald Sibon duly slammed in a penalty in the second half to send the Netherlands into the quarterfinals of the men's Olympic soccer on Aug 14. The Dutch was awarded the penalty kick in the 73rd minute, after Liverpool's Ryan Babel was hauled down at the edge of the area by midfielder Keisuke Honda.
