| Statistics recently released by authorities show robust GDP growth in China's central and western provinces in the first half of the year. Shaanxi, Hubei and Hunan all reported growth rates higher than 14%, and Ningxia is expected to report a striking 18% expansion, way above the 11.1% national average. |

| BP is to sell assets in Texas, Canada and Egypt to part-fund the clean-up costs and damages claims resulting from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The oil giant said it had reached a $7 billion deal with US-based oil production firm Apache Corp. The spill has already cost BP some $4 billion. |

| French police have arrested an Air France stewardess on suspicion of stealing cash, cards and jewelry as passengers slept on long haul flights, Le Figaro reported Tuesday. Police investigating thefts over several months on flights between France and the Far East picked up 47-year old attendant Lucie R after she landed from Tokyo Friday. According to the newspaper, the woman, who worked mainly in business class, began her spree in March 2009 to ease financial problems. |

| Authorities in Russia have opened an animal cruelty probe into a weekend stunt in which a donkey parasailed high over a beach on the AzovSea in southern Russia. Video footage showed men attaching a parasail harness to the trembling mule. Sunbathers were distressed at the sight of the flying donkey, which brayed in fear as it glided above the bay for half an hour. The stunt was part of an advertising campaign by Russian entrepreneurs to attract people to their private beach. Organizers could face up to two years in prison if convicted of animal cruelty. |
