| Over 20 years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the prawn-like aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. |

| Civil unrest has made it no longer safe for the aliens to be in such close proximity to the citizens of Johannesburg. MNU agents - backed by heavily armed security personnel - go door to door informing the aliens they're being moved, obtaining their signatures on eviction forms to prove they've been notified. This operation is led by Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), a by-the-book young man just promoted to the job of overseeing the transfer of the prawns to District 10. Wikus has a loving wife who just happens to be his boss' daughter, an optimistic attitude, and a thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding all things alien. |

| But in one shack, Wikus makes a discovery that changes his life forever. While delivering eviction notices, he discovers and tries to clear an illegal lab run by an intelligent, green-skinned prawn, Christopher Johnson (voiced by Jason Cope). In doing so, Wikus unwittingly gets infected with the alien virus that rapidly changes his DNA. Within hours, he grows an alien claw for a hand. |

Wilkus escapes and the chase is on. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9. There he is forced into an uneasy alliance with Christopher and his young son. Seems that virus he came in contact with is the liquid Johnson has been distilling for the past two decades to power the mother ship back home. |
