Olympic and world championships titlist Tian Liang is well on his way to his first Universiade title Monday when he romped into the men's 10m platform final with a firm lead.
Tian, who turned 22 Monday, had been leading the 18-man field all through the semifinal and wound up with 662.88 points for his four semifinal and six preliminary dives.
Cuban Jose Guerra, reigning Universiade champion in the event, trailed 35 points back with 627.60 points, ahead of another Chinese diver Li Chengwei, who was third with 614.37 points.
Russia's Roman Volodkov finished fourth with 607.74 points, ahead of Pak Yong Ryong, from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, who got 598.20 points to place fifth. Mexican veteran Fernando Platas, who took a silver in the men's 3m springboard on Saturday, came sixth with 585.06 points.
The final of the event, the sixth at the Tsinghua University diving pool, kicks off at 8:00 Monday evening.
China has swept all five gold medals in as many events at the Universiade in the past four days.
